If Sharks Disappeared, by Lily Williams

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Young audiences learn conservation vocabulary and concepts through an illustrated examination of what might happen if sharks were to become extinct. A brown-skinned girl in a boat acts as a guide for this predictive exercise. She first introduces sharks as part of a healthy ocean, then describes the ways in which sharks influence our ecosystem. In accessible language that doesn't shy away from scientific terminology, the book lays out the path of the trophic cascade that might result from a complete shark extinction. Vibrant seascapes full of movement and a diverse array of underwater flora and fauna contrast sharply with spreads of an ocean choked with algae and devoid of wildlife and plants. Ending on a hopeful note that reaffirms the importance of sharks and downplays their scary reputation, Williams appends additional information on threats to sharks, suggestions for child-appropriate actions to take, and an author's note. A former animator, Williams offers illustrations that balance scientific accuracy with a familiar and appealing cartoon quality. Text color and placement and variations in page layout provide plenty of variety and visual interest but may slow down read-alouds. VERDICT While the future is impossible to predict, Williams presents a scientifically grounded view of a world without sharks that should spark discussion and inspire action in budding ecologists. A terrific addition to any school or public library.—Chelsea Couillard-Smith, Hennepin County Library, MN

Chock-full of playful, fun, and richly-colorful illustrations as vibrant as the ocean itself, "If Sharks Disappeared" is an expertly-paced call to action from debuting author/illustrator Lily Williams. Never tempering her message, Williams does a delightful job of walking the reader through the well-researched reality of what would happen if sharks were removed from the delicate ocean ecosystem. She adeptly places the shark in our evolutionary timeline (spoiler: they've been around a VERY long time) and then proceeds with a cause-and-effect journey that should easily leave your head spinning. Who realized just how important sharks truly are to life on planet Earth?!This is a great book for expanding a child's scientific vocabulary (complete with a Glossary in the back) and for clearly and concisely explaining to everyone the true value of creatures of sea and land, from large to small. There are even some great tips on what you can do today to start turning the tide on shark endangerment. I can't recommend this book enough as a must-have addition to any child's library (and to any personal or public library, as well)!

This book has it all: a great message about caring for our oceans, a positive message about sharks (something I wish I'd read more about as a kid), beautiful and creative illustrations that kids will love, and best of all - scientifically accurate! Well researched and well presented for little kids and big kids - easy to get lost in the pictures for little kids, easy information for bigger kids to latch on to and learn. This book will be the inspiration of future marine biologists. You'll do a service to your kids or classroom if you introduce them to this book!

Wonderful book with a valuable message to all ages. The illustrations are marvelous! The information is straight forward and easy to understand. I went straight to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch list in the authors notes, "how you can help save sharks." I love this book and I have ordered more copies as gifts to new parents and friends interested to our environment and it's sustainably. Creative, thoughtful and important book! Thank you Lily Williams!

Lily is a phenomenal author and illustrator! My students and I learned so much about the importance of sharks. The book is full of facts and interesting information. I love how it even gives suggestions on how to help sharks. This was one of our favorite books of the year!

I love the perspective of this super cool book! Its a great conversation starter with your kids about the way that all animals and life connect on this planet. Its an important topic for sure, but the illustrations are so fun that it is really really fun to read.

Gave it as a gift to a shark loving kid! He loves it!

A great book to read to your little one. Beautiful illustrations and very clear story.

This book is Brilliant. Students were engaged when reading and they learned the importance of sharks, which gave them an even better idea of a food chain.

Review

"A work of genuine literary merit . . . What Mr. Kesey has done in his unusual novel is to transform the plight of a ward of inmates in a mental hospital into a glittering parable of good and evil."--The New York Times Book Review"[A] brilliant first novel . . . a strong, warm story about the nature of human good and evil . . . Keysey has made his book a roar of protest against middlebrow society's Rules and the invisible Rulers who enforce them."--Time"The final triumph of these men at the cost of a terrifying sacrifice should send chills down any reader's back. . . . This novel's scenes have the liveliness of a motion picture."--The Washington Post"An outstanding book . . . [Kesey's] characters are original and real. . . . This is a tirade against the increasing controls over man and his mind, yet the author never gets on a soap box. Nor does he forget that there is a thin line between tragedy and comedy."--Houston Chronicle

If you are intrigued by stories about the human condition, then you'll do no better than One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This is an incredible story of how indomitable and influential the human spirit can be, even in the face of a manipulative and controlling system that cares little for anyone or anything beyond winning. An absolute must read!

Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Although the story takes place mainly in a mental hospital, its ramifications can be felt in all of the broader society. The struggles depicted in the various characters, both internally and inter-personally, will give the reader pause and perhaps change your perception on life. The story at its core encompasses the struggle between the individual (portrayed by Randall McMurphy) and the establishment (Portrayed by nurse Ratched.) It is told through the eyes of the schizophrenic half-Indian known as Chief Bromden. Bromden has pretended to be deaf and dumb for so long that everyone takes this fact for granted. It also allows him to overhear comments from the staff that others would not. The Chief is an interesting choice as narrator, and at times it seemed like he was rambling on about nothing. Unreliable narrators can be a touchy thing, but Kesey is able to navigate his way through the Chief's mind, and in time we find his ramblings have a purpose. He views the establishment as a machine, which he refers to as "the combine." He speaks of fog machines, wires in the walls, and robotic people, and views them as part of the combine. Even the name of the nurse, Ratched, sounds almost like "ratchet," which is a common tool. The Chief sees the struggle between the Big Nurse, as he calls Ratched, and McMurphy, and even though he has a sense right away that McMurphy is different, Bromden doesn't hold out much hope. After all, the combine is a massive machine and the Chief knows what it did to him. Bromden tells McMurphy he "used to be big," but not any more. The Chief's mother, a white woman from town, along with the government, broke down both he and his father and became bigger than both of them put together. The antagonist is Ratched, an ex-army nurse who rules the ward with an iron fist. She preys on the weaknesses of the patients and attacks them in those areas. She is all about control and power, and over her long career has devised many ways of projecting this with a cold, machine-like efficiency. Ratched has hand picked her staff based on their cruelty and submissiveness. The Chief calls her "The Big Nurse," which reminds me of Orwell's Big Brother, and mentions early on that "The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate, precision-made machine" (pg 24). Indeed the Chief sees her as a machine, part of the combine who's purpose is to make others small. Ratched represents the oppressive nature and de-humanization present in modern society. And then there is Randle McMurphy. Sent to the ward from a work farm (because it's "easier" time), McMurphy comes in loud and confident. His singing and laughter are something new for the patients so used to suppressing their emotions. And he is definitely not the kind of patient the mechanical and repressive Nurse Ratched wants. It only takes McMurphy one group session to see Ratched's method of exposing the patient's weakest areas and pecking them into submission. Harding, the subject of the group meetings earlier frenzy, explains that it was all therapeutic. McMurphy, however, gives Harding his perception: "what she is is a ball-cutter. I've seen a thousand of 'em...people who try to make you weak so they can get you to...live like they want you to. And the best way to do this...is to weaken you by gettin' you where it hurts the worst" (pg 56). So McMurphy, ever the gambling man, makes a bet with his fellow patients that he would be able to make Ratched lose her composure, and he accomplished this by using her own tactics against her. As he pulls Bromden and the others out of the "fog" and makes them big again, McMurphy unwittingly becomes the savior of his fellow patients. It did not go un-noticed that the electroshock table was cross-shaped with the patient restrained by the wrists and feet and a "crown" placed over his head. When McMurphy rips Nurse Ratched's tightly starched uniform and exposes her breasts, he is symbolically exposing her hypocrisy and breaking the power she had once wielded over the patients. Chief Bromden's final act of mercy cemented Nurse Ratched's fall as well as giving McMurphy the dignity that he had earned.Perhaps the largest piece of advice I pulled from this novel is to never let anyone or anything take your individuality. Society in general would like to have everyone fit into the same mold because then the people are easier to predict and control. However, we all need a McMurphy in our lives to show us that we can still be individuals and fit into society. And when The Combine tries to weaken you and make you conform, just throw your head back and laugh like McMurphy, "because he knows you have laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep yourself in balance, just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy" (pg 233).

This is an amazing book. I didn’t read this until I hit thirty; the reason for this being I thought less of it due to having seen the film. The film is not bad, but for me One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest was its film version, full stop. I eventually decided to read the book after learning about the interesting life its author Ken Kesey lived, including that he wrote much of this book while working at a mental hospital. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest deals with the relationship between freedom and power, and about how mental illness develops when the power of others dominates an individual to such a great extent that he/she can no longer act free. The individuals in the hospital are shown by Kesey to be lacking in courage and self-belief, and demonstrate an unwillingness to act without permission and approval. While the hospital should be making patients better it actually makes them worse by actively discouraging attempts to be assertive and by labelling any attempt to act free from the constraints of institutional power as symptomatic of a worsening of the underlying disorder. The book is told through the eyes of Chief Bowden: a part Indian man that has spent a long time in the hospital pretending to be deaf and mute. Through the subjective experiences of the Chief, Kesey presents the actual experiences of mental illness. Kesey in doing this dismisses the notion that mental illness is unreal but reveals how its treatment is sometimes abused to keep people in line. Chief Bowden experiences things through metaphorical hallucinations. For example, when speaking of the power held by the Big Nurse, he literally sees wires running from her office into the bodies of those that she controls. This conception of mental illness is similar to that found in R.D Laing’s book the Divided Self: the mentally ill person is someone that cannot face the pain of reality and retreats into their own realm, but reality still intrudes via metaphorical representations. Throughout the novel Chief Bowden focuses on the power struggle taking place between Randle McMurphy and the Big Nurse. McMurphy is not in hospital voluntarily but has committed an offence which landed him on a work farm. He is transferred to the mental hospital partly of his own design to escape drudgery. McMurphy immediately emerges as a threat to the Big Nurse due to his willingness to question process and act without fear. He is not scared of authority and does not censor himself when confronted with the subtle shaming techniques of the Big Nurse. The Big Nurse effectively runs the hospital. She is shown through the subjective eye of Chief Bowden to be solely concerned with maintaining her grip of power over the hospital. She is obsessed with process; she pretends to enforce process for the therapeutic value that the processes have on the patients, when in reality she loves the process because it is her process and provides her with a sense of security and power. The interactions between McMurphy and Big Nurse question the extent to which people can be free. Sartre once argued that individuals are totally free so that even if facing the death penalty we are free to defy the executioners by mentally not accepting their interpretation of events and the descriptions placed on them. McMurphy is a Sartrean hero as he does not allow the views of others and the subtle attempts to shun and devalue him dictate how he behaves. However, as the book plays out Kesey demonstrates that living in this manner may not lead to a life of pleasure or fame but may involve the free person being crushed by power structures and processes that do not appreciate the questioning of where power lies. I would argue that One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest offers a modern presentation of the story found in the New Testament. Like Christ, McMurphy questions the powers of his time: in this case psychiatry and bureaucratic process rather than the Jewish religious leaders. Like Christ he questioned the intentions of the powers that be and acted as a free human rather than someone embarrassed by their true nature. Moreover, like Christ, McMurphy suffers at the hands of an authority that pretends to be in place for the concern of the many when in reality it gives power to the few, and in suffering on the Cross gives the weak a lasting sense of freedom.See my other reviews at amateurreviewspace.blogspot.com

I can't tell you how many times i've read this book. I know exactly what happens, but it never fails to get my adrenaline pumping right before major events in the book. It's just that good.I'm a psychologist, so it never fails to disturb me - I want to educate others as to what mental heath treatment is like today. It does not resemble One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest at all. I have used excepts of this book and the movie (Jack Nicholson was really hot!) in my classes to spark discussions about perceptions of mental health facilities and treatment. Students seem to like this - they are more engaged and willing to participate.Definitely worth a permanent spot on your bookshelf or ereader, psychologist or not. Highly recommend.

"Obviously, some drives are created more equal than others. But Reader's Digest does show that scenic beauty is endemic to every part of the country. Even if you can't hit the road and drive them all, this updated version...uses gorgeous color photos to show you what you could see if you did. And each drive is accompanied by a helpful map to let your imagination guide you along the way." (The Oregonian)"Often times when we are on a cross-country trip, we use the interstate highway system for most of the trip. Unfortunately, this causes us to miss out on a lot of the scenic beauty that America offers. There is a book published by Readers Digest entitled The Most Scenic Drives in America that can be used to deal with this problem. This book contains 120 scenic drives throughout the entire country." (-RV Directions (rvdirections.info))"A one-of-a-kind trip planner, a superb on-the-road reference, and an album of 400 photographs. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, here are 120 outstanding drives that show the magnificence of America-each with detailed, easy-to-follow maps. Taking a drive in the country has been popular since horse-and-buggy days. But while the road trip itch is as strong as ever, scenic drives get scarcer year by year. The answer is a collection of the 120 loveliest drives in the U.S., providing maps and tours (with sites along the way itemized and lovingly described), trip length, when to go, nearby attractions, and local information sources." What a delightful book! The purpose is laid up right at the outset (Page 5): "One of America's most popular pastimes is, quite simply, going for long, leisurely drives in the country--and that's what this book is all about." Through this volume, we see 120 separate trips, each described in enough detail (normally 2-4 pages with a map) to decide if that tour might make sense to you.Let's look at a few examples. One from my own experience--many years ago--is California's Big Sur Coast (pages 74-77). The trip starts at Monterey, goes on to Carmel-by-the-Sea to Big Sur (what a view from the highway, as I recall!) to San Simeon and the Hearst Castle, ending in San Luis Obispo.I'm from Illinois, and there is precious little here from my home state! One is a trip from Galena to Port Byron; the other is a drive through the Shawnee Hills National Forest.I also lived in Western New York for many years. This tour ends at Niagara Falls, one of my favorite spots. The tour starts at the Eisenhower Lock along the Saint Lawrence River and winds through Ogdensburg (with its wonderful Remington Art Museum) to Thousand Island and on to Rochester and Old Fort Niagara with an end in Niagara Falls. I have seen many of these sites and can attest to the delight I would experience if I traveled the full length of this route. In the end, a delightful book to read and to provoke the imagination as to what the various trips would be like.

We have used and loved the Reader's Digests' "Most Scenic Drives in America" for several editions now, and decided to purchase the latest edition in an e-reader format, for ease of use. I expected the e-edition to be somewhat clunky, given that the book has lots of maps and pictures, but it I did not expect it to be virtually useless -- which it is. The absence of a table of contents makes it virtually impossible to use for trip planning. If, for example, you wanted to see what was available in Arkansas, you would either have to search the word "Arkansas", you get 29 hits, several of which have nothing to do with travelling in the state. For the first two sections -- the West and the Rocky Mountains -- there are regional lists of drives, but I could not find these for the rest of the regions.Anyone who is planning a road trip in the US should certainly own this book -- it's been a great help to us in planning trips, and has helped build many beautiful memories. Definitely, a five star effort. JUST DON'T BUY THE EBOOK.

While it's true that a table of contents or an index is missing from the Kindle implementation, it's still a great book. Instead of the missing content table, it has 4 regional route overviews (West, Rockies, Central, Eastern) inside the book. The usability can be greatly improved by going through the book and adding bookmarks at all 4 region overviews, which cost me less than 15 minutes.

Big, beautiful, coffee-table book with great drives and detailed maps. However, I can't imagine taking it on a driving trip because it is very large and heavy. The maps are too big to copy on a regular-size sheet of paper. So, unfortunately, I returned the book in favor of a smaller one.

This edition is defective and i hope the editors read this review and fix it, because if they do it will be a great book:The problem with this kindle edition is they have mixed some states in their central states region map and content and in the eastern states map and content resulting that all those roads in those states have mixed numbers that do not coincide with the roads description:The states that show repeated in both regions are:IN, OH, KY, TN, MS, AL and MS. All of those have wrong roads description numbers and you can not find the road trip by the number, sometimes you can just not find it at all. You will have to spent an incredible amount of time figuring out which on it is making it unusable. When you are busy on the road you will not have the time to figure those things out. I did not have the time to check the rest of the book to see if there are more errors or try more regions. I had to return it.Hopefully this gets fixed by the editors because this book is expensive compared with similar great books like the "National Geographic guide to Scenic Highways and Byways": I have that too and is greatly useful with no errors.

I've taken 4 of these drives and they were well worth the price of this book. Sure you can find recommendations on the internet for free, but Reader's Digest calls upon tried and true routes. They give you a good idea of where you want to go and as I was driving through the areas, I'd have someone read the description. That really added to the drive.I know you may be hesitant, but I'd say go ahead and buy this book and read about the drive as you're experiencing it. It's worth the money.

This particular book I purchased as a gift for my grandson. I own my own copy and have used it for numerous trips that are included in the book. It is very helpful; takes you on road that are "off the beaten path" and shows you a great part of the country that doesn't get seen when driving the interstates.

I sent this as a Christmas gift last year to some family members who are starting to plan road trips with their grandkids. They've traveled all over the world (including US) and they truly loved this. What steered me towards it were the reviews, and I'll just add mine. Also, they're under strict instructions to let me know if they don't like something, lol. This is a 2nd hand review, but still legit!

The Savage Detectives: A Novel, by Roberto Bolaño

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Significant Seven, May 2007: The late Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño has been called the García Marquez of his generation, but his novel The Savage Detectives is a lot closer to Y Tu Mamá También than it is to One Hundred Years of Solitude. Hilarious and sexy, meandering and melancholy, full of inside jokes about Latin American literati that you don't have to understand to enjoy, The Savage Detectives is a companionable and complicated road trip through Mexico City, Barcelona, Israel, Liberia, and finally the desert of northern Mexico. It's the first of Bolaño's two giant masterpieces to be translated into English (the second, 2666, is due out next year), and you can see how he's influenced an era. --Tom Nissley Questions for Translator Natasha Wimmer Natasha Wimmer translated books by Mario Vargas Llosa and Bolaño's good friend Rodrigo Fresán, among others, before tackling Bolaño's two long novels, The Savage Detectives and the upcoming 2666, which have had an immeasurable impact on modern Latin American fiction (and perhaps now on Anglo American writing as well). We asked her a few questions about the process of bringing such a vast and vital book into English. Amazon.com: How did you come to literary translation, and to translating a work of such prestige? Is the community of Spanish-to-English literary translators small, given Americans' famous lack of interest in translated work? Wimmer: Luck, really. I lived in Spain when I was little, which is where I learned Spanish, and then I studied Spanish literature in college, but it was a job in publishing--at FSG, the publisher of The Savage Detectives--that made me realize that literary translation was something I could try. I’ve been translating now for eight years. My first project was a novel by the Cuban writer Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, Dirty Havana Trilogy, and since then I’ve worked on books by Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel Zaid, Rodrigo Fresán, and Laura Restrepo. When I read The Savage Detectives, I thought it was one of the best novels I had read in any language in years, but I was sure there was no chance I would get to translate it. Bolaño already had a great translator--Chris Andrews. But Andrews couldn't do it, and I was the extremely fortunate runner-up. The community of full-time translators is definitely small--it's hard to make a living. But there are many great occasional translators--professors, editors, writers. Amazon.com: We're told that Bolaño towers over his generation of writers (and I can believe it). What did he do that was new? What has his influence been? Wimmer: Bolaño was (is) the first to make a true break from the legacy of the Boom. Many other writers of his generation, and younger writers, too, have tried and are still trying to make a literature of their own, one that doesn’t languish in the long shadow of García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and the other novelists who exploded on the world scene in the 1960s. Bolaño made the leap seem effortless. The writers of the Boom put Latin America on the map. Bolaño creates a Latin America of the mind, a post-nationalist Latin America filtered through a rootless, restless, uncompromising literary sensibility. Amazon.com: Could you describe Bolaño's style and his sentences? (I love his parentheses.) How did you handle the dozens of voices in The Savage Detectives? Wimmer: Bolaño is both a maximalist and a classicist. He loves to play with excess, with the notion of reckless abandon, but beneath that there is a very careful sense of balance. He was a poet for many years before he became a novelist, and he is an endlessly inventive stylist. But--more rarely for a poet--he also has an unerring sense of character and a palpable fondness for his characters. The Savage Detectives could never have worked otherwise. There are very few writers who could write a novel from the perspective of fifty-odd characters and make each character's story seem urgent and intimate. From the translator's perspective, some voices were definitely more difficult than others, but I rarely felt that I had to strain to make them distinct from each other. Mostly, it just involved following Bolaño's cues. The hardest thing, oddly enough, was getting the rhythm of his sentences right. There is something syncopated and unpredictable about them that would have been all too easy to smooth over as a translator, and I made a concerted effort not to do that. Amazon.com: All of his books are full of references to, and appearances by, Latin American writers both fictional and real and I'm sure as a clueless American reader I'm missing hundreds of inside jokes. What's it like to read his work when you actually know the people he's referring to? Wimmer: It adds a little something, but not as much as you might think. And many of his references are obscure even to Spanish-language readers. There is something cultish and purposefully arcane about the literary world that Bolaño's protagonist, García Madero, yearns to join, and like García Madero, the reader is entranced by authors' names and book titles without knowing exactly where they come from. Amazon.com: You are working on translating his other giant masterpiece, 2666, the even larger novel that he completed just before his death. How is it going? What can we expect from 2666? Wimmer: It's an extremely long novel (1100 pages in the Spanish edition ), so it's a test of stamina, but it's going very well. Like The Savage Detectives, it revolves around a lost writer (Cesárea Tinajero in TSD and Benno von Archimboldi in 2666), and the crucial episodes take place in the north of Mexico, but it is a darker book. The lurking sense of dread that many of the characters feel in TSD becomes something more palpable and sharply defined in 2666, and is linked to the killings of women in the Mexican city of Santa Teresa (modeled on Ciudad Juárez) and the legacy of the wars of the 20th century, particularly World War II.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. This novel—the major work from Chilean-born novelist Bolaño (1953–2003) here beautifully translated by Wimmer—will allow English speaking readers to discover a truly great writer. In early 1970s Mexico City, young poets Arturo Belano (Bolaño's alter ego and a regular in his fiction) and Ulises Lima start a small, erratically militant literary movement, the Visceral Realists, named for another, semimythical group started in the 1920s by the nearly forgotten poet Cesárea Tinajero. The book opens with 17 year-old Juan García Madero's precocious, deadpan notebook entries, dated 1975, chronicling his initiation into the movement. The long middle section—written, like George Plimpton's Edie, as a set of anxiously vivid testimonies from friends, lovers, bystanders and a great many enemies—tracks Belano and Lima as they travel the globe from 1975 to the mid-1990s. There are copious, and acidly hilarious, references to the Latin American literary scene, and one needn't be an insider to get the jokes: they're all in Bolaño's masterful shifts in tone, captured with precision by Wimmer. The book's moving final section flashes back to 1976, as Belano, Lima and García Madero search for Cesárea Tinajero, with a young hooker named Lupe in tow. Bolaño fashions an engrossing lost world of youth and utopian ambition, as particular and vivid as it is sad and uncontainable. (Apr.) My favorite novel. Please read this book while you’re still young and still inhabit a world that isn’t too large to have lost its charms. It took me four months to read The Savage Detectives the first time, even though I read it every day, because this is the sort of book that rewires the very circuits of your soul. It haunts the emotional background of your day-of-day life long after you set it down. Of course, back then I was 19 and living in New York and primed for all manners of literary cliche. Now that I’m older, and slightly more aware of just how impossibly large this world is, I am eager to read it a second time.

I really did enjoy this novel immensely, but there were a few aspects that often left me confused or just plain bothered.Several times, they list writers of their time. Since a few obscure real-life writers' names show up, I assume all these are real. If I were more familiar with these writers, I would probably get the satire, but I am not so I didn't get it.On the other hand, the story is fascinating! And though I was disappointed when the narrator disappeared, I did find it fun to follow these characters all over the world. And you won't understand the title at all until then end. And even then, not completely.Bolaño is a genious. Or he was. It's tragic that he died so young, just when he was picking up speed. So many stories we will miss out on.

Loved the opening section. As for second section, am stuck on about page 400 and can't decide whether to finish or not. The second section has some very ugly, unexplained parts (like when the author's alter-ego is trying to strangle someone on a beach) and some parts that just seem to have been written and included compulsively and drag out the text unnecessarily. It also has a hilarious scene in a publisher's office very reminiscent of Bulgakov, can't decide whether this was intentional nor not.Any writer who wants instruction in how to orient the reader to time and place should take this book as the only lesson they will need. Also, in a novel about poets, not one line of poetry from the main characters...fantastic device. No, this is not a character-driven book: it is about the life and death of a way of life and way of seeing the world, of a time and place that the author misses very much. If you view Visceral Realism in Mexico City in the late 1970's as a character in its own right, you will be just as saddened to see it unraveling, along with its leaders, as you would with any other literary character. This edition is worth reading for the author's comments in interviews on Latin American literature alone....never liked Vargas Llosa or Isabel Allende, or Laura Esquivel, and I now feel freed.

Every so often you come upon a book that you can only diminish the more you try to explain what it's about. "The Savage Detectives" is such a book. Ostensibly it's about a couple of wild young poets who revive an old literary movement and go in search of its forebears. Ultimately they grow older, become increasingly disillusioned, never attain their once-lofty aspirations, heading straight for neglect and oblivion...and yet through everything they still hold on to a belief--a faith, if you will--in poetry and revolution.Okay, that's, in a nutshell, what the novel is "about."But the experience of reading "The Savage Detectives" is one that cannot be described in words other than those Bolano himself used to create this passionate and poetic adventure of heart, mind, and soul. This is a book that follows two characters--through the eyes of a dozen or so other characters--who take literature seriously, as a matter of life and death, not as a mere pastime, not as simple entertainment. If you don't share something of the same conviction, you're likely not to get the point of this novel; actually, you're likely to conclude that there isn't any point to it at all. This is a novel that cannot be contained, nor can it contain itself. If it's difficult to say precisely what it's about, that's in good part because it's about everything--about life and death, about love and art, about beauty and squalor, corruption and violence, humanity and inhumanity. "The Savage Detectives" has the tone and authority of a summing up of all that Bolano had seen and thought in his abbreviated life--a message he was desperate to get down, if not in the most symmetrical of forms, than in a far more honest, if messy, explosion of urgency. This novel throbs with life and intensity--it manages to be both unbearably sad and irresistibly inspiring. Bolano writes as if he's running only a step or two in front of the burning fuse, which, as it turns out, he was. In the end, though, we all share the same fate. And it seems a good part of Bolano's intent to get us to realize, viscerally, as his fictional "visceral realist" poets do, that time is short and the world is big. Let's live while we can. It's tempting to call "The Savage Detectives" the best book I've read all year, but such an assertion would no doubt be suspect because of the fact that it's the most recent book I've read. It is, however, at the very least, among the best books I've read in this or any year.Take the negative reviews of "The Savage Detectives" under advisement. So many of them complain precisely about those things that make this novel so unique and so powerful. Like his even more ambitious "2666," "The Savage Detectives" simply isn't everyone's favorite slice of pie. There are people, after all, who hate coconut custard. Go figure.

The Minor Prophets: A Commentary on Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, by Thomas Edward McComiskey

From the Back Cover

With their messages of doom and judgment, the Minor Prophets have not been popular subjects in the history of biblical interpretation. In this exegetical and expository commentary, noted scholars remedy this neglect by offering an authoritative, evangelical treatment on the prophets. This volume, the third of three, features commentary by J. Alec Motyer (Zephaniah and Haggai), Thomas McComiskey (Zechariah), and Douglas Stuart (Malachi). The authors not only provide meticulous exegesis of the Hebrew text but also relate the message of the ancient prophets to contemporary life in practical and meaningful ways.Praise for The Minor Prophets"Although written from an evangelical perspective, not one of the volumes shies away from critical questions, making it a useful book for both the academic scholar and the minister in the local congregation."--S. D. Snyman, Old Testament Essays"The information in this book will help in any serious study of an often neglected segment of the Bible."--Dianne Bergant, CSA, The Bible Today"Its combination of attention given to technical and expositional issues makes it one of the best sets on this part of the Old Testament."--Michael A. Grisanti, Master's Seminary Journal"Preachers and teachers will find the 'nuts and bolts' analysis of the Hebrew text in this commentary to be helpful for their tasks."--Robert R. Ellis, Review and Expositor"A worthwhile investment both for the interested and knowledgeable layperson as well as the intermediate-level student."--Ronald L. Androphy, Hebrew Studies"Overall, this is probably the best exegetical commentary on these books for the pastor's study."--John F. Brug, Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly"This volume is a solid resource for both student and pastor. It provides a demonstration of what evangelical scholarship can do as it honestly wrestles with the text."--Gerald Wheeler, Andrews University Seminary Studies

The most important part ... these books are out of print. The second most important part is that they are, without question, the very best commentaries of the Minor Prophets that I've ever run into. There are 2 ways to acquire McComisky's Minor Prophet's.The first way is to buy this printing volume by volume to collect the 3 volume set. That's how I started. You will quickly find that as you are ready for Vol. 3, the price spikes outrageously if it's available at all. Not that the first 2 volumes are inexpensive. The second way is to acquire Minor Prophets, The: An Exegetical and Expository Commentary I finally found one from a seminary bookstore in Saskatchewan about 10 Google pages into the search. This printing has the 3 volumes in one book. So, I was frankly unable to find the 3rd volume. I searched the web a couple hours over a couple days and made phone calls. Sellers advertise it but then don't have it at checkout. The Minor Prophets is an amazing deep dive study experience.

This is by far the best commentary I've ever read. I was a Bible student and read through dozens of different commentaries by who knows how many authors and this is the one that stands out to me. I don't know why it costs so much right now. I'd love to say it's worth the money, but $700 bucks for a commentary is probably not your cup of tea unless you have the money to blow. If you do, blow it on this. Because of this commentary, the minor prophets came alive to me for the first time. Before I read them I had the typical view of the minor prophets as doom and gloom, and this commentary opened my eyes to the message of grace that is the backdrop to the message for all the minor prophets. This is crucial to understanding how God really views sin, condemnation, and punishment. They are never without a message of Grace and should not be preached as though they were. I wish it were cheaper so more people could partake.

This is the best, most thorough commentary I have ever used. It still has a lot of Hebrew, but it is not so heavy laden with it that a person of limited Hebrew skills may still easily use it. This is a very thorough handling of the 12 Minor Prophets. It is a great resource for both the exegetical and expository information. I would agree with other comments that the emphasis of God's grace is very refreshing as it is balanced between God's judgment and the blessings He still bestows on His people. This book is very readable! I did not pay the expensive price others did- my copy cost just under $100.00 new from BGBOOKS77. Although the book is well worth a lot more if you are planning to seriously teach or preach from any of the Minor Prophets. This commentary also does a great job of bringing in quotes from other ancient texts to add clarity to the culture of the time or common practices, such as the common way of expressing concepts in writing that are not common for us today but was at that time. All of this is done without compromising the message of the prophet or confusing the Word of God.

I've only read the commentaries on a couple of minor prophets in this book, but I assume the rest of the commentaries follow suit..I don't know Hebrew, so I can't comment on the comments on the Hebrew. After an introduction to each minor prophet with a discussion on the author, date, theme, etc., the commentator's translation of the book is shown in parallel with the NASB. From there the commentary is divided in two sections which run in parallel: one section with translator's notes and discussions of the Hebrew words and tenses, and one section which is comparable to a "traditional" commentary with references to other verses, information on the culture and context, literary structure, pastor's notes, etc.I'm very happy with this book and am looking forward to learning Hebrew, and am looking forward to understanding the commentary on the original language! I recommend this to anyone interested in the Word of God who doesn't mind carrying heavy books.

This book is worth the money. It includes all the minor prophets. All of the contributors refer to recent archaeological finds and to the influence of the literature of of the surrounding nations. My complaint is that all of the contributors consider the Christian Church to be the fulfillment of the eschatological prophecies. This is not fair to the prophets. The prophets prophesy that in the latter day the Jews will be secure in their homeland, the Jewish law will be supreme, and Gentiles will seek out the Jewish religion. The contributors to this book feel those prophecies were fulfilled by a religion that saw the Jews chased out of their homeland and that declared the Mosaic law to no longer be in force. I would like to read a commentary that shows respect for what the Minor Prophets were trying to say, even though it is obvious they were too optimistic about the future.

I recently preached through and wrote a seminary paper on Jonah. I found this commentary to be very helpful and concise. I have not read anything outside of Jonah but I do feel that the introductory material was a little skimpy (about 10 pages) and did not hit all the major issues with enough detail. Genre, a massive issue for the book with huge implications for interpretation and exposition, was only touched on for 2 paragraphs. Baldwin seems to take a parabolic rather than historical view.As a poor seminoid, this is the most expensive single volume I have ever owned. I guess for $400 bucks I was expecting it to preach my sermons for me! Regardless, I can only speak for Jonah but McComisky does appear to be one of the most comprehensive volumes on the Minor Prophets you can find, a must-have for a serious student of the Twelve. Were it not so expensive, I would give it 5 stars.

McComiskey's 3-volume set on the "minor prophets" is outstanding, the best I have read. The exegesis is carefully done within the historical context and with a high view of biblical inspiration. The insights offered are rich, bringing out the many wonderful word-plays that the English reader misses. All three of these volumes are well worth their price.

Every time I think of Jane Cleland’s book, “Mastering Suspense,” I envision the famous showdown between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan during Star Wars: A New Hope. It’s a legendary scene of dark vs. light; student vs. teacher. Upon seeing Obi-Wan for the first time in decades, Vader says: “I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master.” After reading this book, I feel a little bit like Darth Vader in that duel. Well-taught, empowered, and confident. But hopefully with a little less arrogance and a happier ending in store.I’ve had the pleasure of personally learning under Jane’s mentorship at my MFA program, an experience I esteem highly and cherish greatly. This book is a bit like that: a personal mentorship. Here, Jane has divulged actionable methods for creating better works of writing. This isn’t a book just for mystery writers. She wrote with a wide audience in mind. Whether you’re a memoirist, a historian, or a novelist, you’ll see suspense in a new light. Even better, Jane has provided a masterful process by which you can incorporate suspense into your writing. My favorite sections included exercises you can employ to deepen your knowledge (of characters), expand your settings (and use them to create suspense), and explore nuances regarding betrayal and confusion.Like Alfred Hitchcock once said, surprise is cheap—anyone can do it—but suspense? Suspense is what keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

I have read a lot of how to writing books and this one is in the top seven or eight. Well written, with the added bonus of deconstructed examples, she doesn't just tell you how to build suspense...she shows you. After reading, I applied her methods to the outline of a new novel. Not only was it easy to see where the plot might lag, it helped raise questions that needed answers. Well done.

Outstanding. Like taking a refresher course without leaving the comfort of your home. It is like several workshops condensed into one book. I highly recommend this book for any writer from fledgling novice to seasoned professional. like a breath of fresh air, it will clear out the cobwebs.

The writer Charles Bukowski once said words to the effect that "Nothing teaches you more than failing, and regrouping after your failures." That's definitely true, but that doesn't mean that heeding what others have learned might not save you some time on your own journey. There is some practical advice in "Mastering Suspense," some useful techniques for writing clearer and more readable prose, and also sections on how to keep multiple plot threads under control and in play in the service of a larger narrative without losing sight of either the subplots or main plots.I generally find that if I glean two or three usable bits of info from a "How-To" book, it's money well-spent. Madame Cleland's book met and exceeded my expectations in that regard. The only caveat I would add, though, is that some of the book reads more like a pep talk/motivational speech from a real estate seminar. Other parts are a bit too mercenary for my taste. "Honor your readers" or "Write for your readers, not for yourself" sounds like good advice, and may be, but if there weren't some exceptions to these rules (or writers who didn't create heedless of a lot of the principles laid out in this book) the literary canon would be a poorer place. This is a minor gripe, though, and some of the charts, exercises, and most prosaic bits of advice are worthy accessories to any writer's toolkit, whether you're just getting started or you've been in this crazy game for a long time. Recommended.

This book is chock full of great advice on perfecting your writing. Each chapter is focused and succinct. The exercises are valuable and illustrative. I already had my novel written when I read this book. Now I have to revise it into the novel I thought I wrote, but didn't. Cleland's book will take me there.

Make your writing compelling! Excellent book, excellent information for all writers, regardless of genre or experience. Solid explanations and illustrations of what makes writing compelling--what elements capture and KEEP readers' attention, and keep them turning the pages, as well as how to structure a story that carries the reader (and multiple plot lines) from page to page. The author explains strategies and easy-to-follow methods for weaving compelling elements together, suggesting structures that make the story and plot stronger.Like many, I have a shelf full of writing books--most of which I thought I HAD to have, and then read only the first few pages of before skimming the rest (maybe) and setting aside. I started reading this book, stopped, got up and got a highlighter, started reading again, stopped again, went and got a pen and a notebook, and then read cover-to cover, marking and taking notes. The author explains suspense, structure, and plot--all things I thought I understood--in a way that made me see and understand them (and be able to USE them) in a new light. I'm using that new understanding to craft a stronger story.I highly recommend this book to all writers, and am sure I'll be referring to it again and again. (I just bought some colored flags to mark particularly important sections, so that I can find them easily, and refer to them as I go.)(ps--I did find some of the examples a little odd, and one reference early on that I couldn't make heads or tails of, but that's really a minor wobble.)

Jane Cleland's book uses lots of clear examples and has concrete suggestions for building a plot. While the book concentrates on plot and subplots (more on how to develop a subplot might have been good), she also offers helpful advice for revision and rewriting, especially with different points of view. Many of the excerpts she uses for illustration are quite contemporary, and they make her ideas crystal clear.
